People who ride in Bike MS may do it to support family members, friends or co-workers who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. But there are also legions of participants who live--and ride--with the disease, despite the challenges such as fatigue or weakness.

I Ride with MS is a special National MS Society program that celebrates Bike MS cyclists who are also living with multiple sclerosis. All people living with MS are encouraged to participate in our I Ride with MS program by visiting this page and registering.

Members of the I Ride with MS program enjoy special Bike MS day-of-benefits and receive a complimentary I Ride with MS jersey. I Ride with MS participants are not only committed to cycling to create a world free of MS, but to increasing awareness. Genzyme, a Sanofi company, and Primal Wear are proud supporters of the Bike MS, I Ride with MS program in 2014.

Blake Middleton

Blake Middleton

Blake Middleton was diagnosed in December 2003. "One of the biggest struggles that I deal with is the battle with MS fatigue. The simple response is to submit to it, stop and relax," Middleton said. "The proper response is the hard one; to find reasons to overcome the desire to give up, and to keep moving. Bike MS is a perfect motivation to do that!"

Within weeks of his MS diagnosis, Middleton had friends in three states signing up for Walk MS and Bike MS events in his honor.

"I was a bit surprised and embarrassed by the attention and focus. I was thinking, gosh, I can probably find a way to walk nine miles, so if they are doing this in my honor, I better be part of it."

Middleton joined a Walk MS team started by a dear friend in Minnesota and participated for four years.

"I was empowered by the process of working for the bigger goal of helping create awareness and fundraising on behalf of EVERYONE affected by the disease, instead of just looking inward at my own challenges," Middleton said.

His sister, Lane, was also diagnosed with MS 5 years ago, so that has inspired him to work even harder for the cause. In the last six years, he’s managed a DIY event for the National MS Society called the MS Cup, a sailing race for MS. Middleton’s professional career has involved working as a sailing coach and race manager, so it's been a natural fit and 2014 will also be his third year riding in the Bike MS: Coastal Challenge in Calif. on the NOW/Cynergy team, founded by Phil and Louise Keoghan.
